ABOUT THE FESTIVALS

Theatre Neo's Monologue Festivals are one of the most important, exciting, and worthwhile opportunities we offer members.

Held every 4-6 weeks, these evenings give you the chance to present a prepared performance in a polished, professional setting for at least three (but almost always more) casting directors who have the power to bring you in for auditions for paying work. These casting directors judge the performances and select winners for the evening, winners who then go on to appear in a once-a year showcase of the best of Theatre Neo's monologue performances, entitled The Best of the Best, a gala event attended by a wide variety of top entertainment industry professionals. Innumerable Company members have gotten not only auditions but jobs in TV and film as a direct result of these festivals.

We have no difficulty booking industry guests for these evenings. Casting directors (as well as agents and managers) enjoy attending these festivals because they are guaranteed of seeing up to 28 wonderful actors in a fast-paced, entertaining evening. They can restock their files very easily by judging at a Monologue Festival. Because their schedules often change at the last minute, however, we rarely know the exact lineup in advance; industry guests are always subject to change.

Rules and Signup

We require that you keep your monologues to 3 minutes. We have a timer there, and we will notify you if you run long. (If you happen to win that night and run beyond 3 minutes 30 seconds, you will be disqualified.) The casting directors have told us repeatedly that 3 minutes is plenty of time to get a good sense of an actor's talent, range and castability. In addition, many of the participants have written their own monologues expressly to present themselves in the best possible way. Note that we call these evenings "Festivals", not showcases, because what we present is a performance. You are not at the mercy of whatever material you may be given for the night or stuck with an inappropriate scene partner. The "competition" aspect simply encourages the industry to hang around for the party and meet you.

To sign up for the next Monologue Festival, prepare a packet containing the following items:

- 10 Pictures and Resumes (we have been averaging 4 industry guests, but have frequently had other industry attend i.e., agents, managers, directors and producers)

- A check for $40.00 made payable to "Theatre Neo" (Note: checks are not cashed until after the Festival)

- A fact sheet with your name, phone number, title of piece, type of piece (comedy, drama or dramedy) and a brief, one-sentence description of the monologue.

The drop-off location for Monologue Festival packets is usually at the company meeting immediately prior to the Monologue Festival date. (With rare exceptions, company meetings take place on the first Saturday of the month at 10:00 a.m. The location changes, so go to the Company Meeting Page for more information.) If one is unable to make it to the company meeting, contact Sarah Fairfax directly at (818) 766-7051 to make other arrangements.

Actors participating in the festival are required to be at the theatre at 7:00 p.m. for a "Tech/Run-Through" for the performance at 8:00 p.m. Please notify Sarah Fairfax in advance if there is a chance you will be late that night.
